Another Thing Bites the Dust – The Wireless Router

June has been a very shitty month for me. I am just going to say it. I didn’t get the job I thought I would get nor any job I applied for, my Xbox 360 of 6 years died (which I replaced and been happy with ever since because of the Xbox Kinect), and my HP HDX 18 Laptop died. Oddly enough, I feel like I have done this first paragraph too many times to the point where you realized (and don’t care) that I lost my items and had to buy new ones. Well…it happened…again.

You wouldn’t believe this, but my wireless router died the other day. It didn’t completely die, but the wireless function stopped functioning. It worked as a normal router. Imagine this, 3 fifty foot ethernet cables going every which way around the house connecting to different computers. Some went upstairs and another went outside. As this became a hazard to all those who walk around, I took it upon myself to purchase a new wireless router.

After looking on Google for what is considered the best wireless router, I learned absolutely nothing. Actually, I do not know if I can say nothing. A good lesson that many people know, but somewhat refuse to believe, is that you pay for what you get. With quality comes cost and vice versa.

I started my day doing errands and chores and went to Best Buy to get a new router. Best Buy changes the layout of their store too often. I don’t know if it is just the one by me, but it took me a bit of time to find the wireless routers. There were quite a number of them and I had no idea what the hell to purchase. Thankfully, I remembered a few things from searching the internet.

The list of what I remember were the following:

  1. Expensive is better.
  2. Linksys trumpted the others in tests
  3. It is a dual-band router

It just took those three things for me to figure out which one to get. First off, narrowing down to expensive was the easiest thing. Out of all of them, about 5 were over $100. Out of those 5, only 2 were linksys. Both were dual-band, so I purchased the more expensive one which was the Linksys E4200. It was easy and worth it.

Now, this blog post could be like the others. I could just tell you about what I purchased and that would be it, but I am going to bore you with the installation details. I can honestly say that the computer I am typing this on is not wired to the internet. Obviously we had no issue. In the past, installing a wireless router was like programming the Space Shuttle as it was very difficult and errored filled.

I will attest to the fact that this time around, there was not a single issue besides trying to come up with a name. I put the cd in, followed the instructions, and it was setup within 5 minutes. It even comes with a guest network so they don’t have to figure out what your main password is. That is AWESOME!

Knowing that naming Wifi Networks is always enjoyable, I searched far and wide for a funny name. I must say I found a lot of great sites with some hilarious names. If I were to live in the city, a name would probably come a bit easier as more people would see it. At least I know that my neighbors would see my network, but not know who it is.

The name of my network: Masturbation Anonymous.

Really Bad Timing – RIP My Laptop

This summer hasn’t been treating me very well. Sure, I have been to Florida for 3 weeks, but that seems like forever ago. As you know, my Xbox 360 has died and unfortunately, I had to replace it (although it was long overdue to be replaced). I thought that was the worst of my issues; it wasn’t. Not at all.

Currently, I am writing this blog post from a hijacked my computer. Before I continue, I didn’t steal this laptop. Get your hands off the phone and do not dial 911 (*Cheesy joke is now over). I am on my pops’ computer. He has a HP Pavilion DV6, but it isn’t my laptop, a HP HDX 18. My laptop died. Oddly enough, I am not sure how this has happened. I was in the middle of working on Bunziez (a new blog of mine) and when I went to turn it on, it refused to.

I am not an idiot as I know how to work a computer, fix a computer, and all of that nonsense. After getting my laptop to turn on, I noticed it would not start without throwing up errors out the ass. Lovely! After doing a system restore, which didn’t work, I realized my computer was compromised. Now, I need to try and salvage the hard drive or I will lose everything.

I am very lucky…or smart. Truly, the only thing I care about is my passwords to all of my websites and my school work. What I learned this past spring semester is to use a cloud server. While using Microsoft OneNote (amazing program by the way), all of the files and information stored  All the files that are most needed for my websites are on my server or replacable. Of course, the only thing that I’d like to keep is my music collection as I hate to lose it again.

I shall keep you all updated on what I will do next. Time to go window shopping.

How to Partition and Reformat a Computer using Windows 7

As I posted yesterday, I was reformatting my computer. I wanted to let everyone know the method I took about to do so.

Change Boot Up Sequence

You need to change your boot-up to boot to CD. On a Dell machine it’s usually F2 and on my HP it was ESC or F2.

Go through the BIOs until you found boot sequence. Move CD to the top, and you are good.

Restart and boot from Windows 7 Disk

Not a big deal, but I realized something and it took me 4 tries to realize this. If you reformat via Windows 7 disk, it makes a 100mb partition for a weird reason. NO NEED TO DO THIS! There is a simple work around.

DISKPART at System Setup

When the language choices pop-up from the Windows 7 disk, don’t choose anything…yet!

Hold Shift and hit F10.

You will get to the command screen from here. Type Diskpart.

Now, type list disk. It will list all your partitions.

Selecting Partitions and Formatting them

Now, type select disk # (Don’t actually write #, replace # with the disk partition shown. Most likely, if you only have one partition, the number will be 0, so type select disk 0 if that is the case.)

Now type clean all. (You are going get a blinking cursor telling you that clean all is working like in the second snip down. RELAX! Let it do it’s thing. This takes from 20 minutes to a few hours depending on the size and type of hard drive. Go out to eat or something and come back to this.)

*Warning* If you have a computer such an HP, you will delete the recovery partition. I did not know this and I deleted it all. *Warning*

Stay tuned to tomorrow’s post where I create the partition and set-up Windows 7.

Time to Fill You In

Lately, my blog posts suck ass. I am amazing at life and funny as hell in person, but I am sucking a ton of sphincter when it comes to this whole blogging thing. Anyway, you should continue reading because I will get a handle on this shit. I just need to learn how to transfer my bullshit from in person to this whole blog. Anyway, time to quickly fill you in on my life because I could not really think of anything else to post.  This shall be brief so you don’t commit suicide by smashing your head on your keyboard and dropping the computer on your head.

Let’s see…

I got my computer back from HP. It only cost me a shit ton of money since my warranty expired by a half of year. At least I got a new motherboard, battery port, and screen!

I actually read a book. I actually finished it. I actually read every single word in it.  I shall review it later.

I am not sick with failure.

Besides that, I have my computer back which means I can start working on clients’ sites.

Yours,

Laptops are a Pain in my Arse

First off, I’d like to say that I tried to get this in on Sunday, but I wasn’t home until less than an hour ago and such. So, sorry about that. Like I said, I will try to get to get one post per day. Anyway, recently my laptop died and I wanted to talk about these events. Last Christmas, I received a wonderful HP HDX 18. Since that Christmas, I have used it nonstop. Well, I guess that it couldn’t handle me what-so-ever because just a year and half later, it died like I said. At first, I thought (more like hoping for…) my battery was bad because I was always notified that my battery sucked, which it did. My charger was also a bit frayed. With that said, I purchased a new battery and charger. Unfortunately, after waiting and running home to replace it, I found myself upset as it was not the cause. What I truly think it is, which I was totally not hoping for, is my motherboard fried from poor cooling. Now, I sent it into HP where they say they are fixing it.

I must say that not having my laptop has been quite hard on me. I never realized how much of a role it plays on my life until recently. I basically live off my computer. Everything I do is through the computer. What I want to accomplish, a successful monetized website, is on the computer. Its a very difficult process considering according to many others, I am constantly doing it wrong. Although, this is not the point I am trying to make with this blog post. Anyway, I spend way too much time on the computer, but to be completely honest, I love it. I truly enjoy spending my time learning, testing, and trying to accomplish new things.

My issue, which I want to tell everyone is to backup and do it frequently. I was afraid I lost almost everything on my hard drive. Luckily, it was only my motherboard, not my hard drive. Unfortunately, I am lazy and don’t trust myself with deconstructing a computer, so I payed Geek Squad to do it for me. They were able to thankfully save everything. I am very fortunate for this and I now will learn from my mistake. From now on, I shall back up frequently and hopefully never have this problem again. You should too. I also should learn how to make my blog posts more exciting and boring because even I am bored with these posts!
